Last night Louis CK announced a 36-date tour that will begin right here in Cleveland, at Severance Hall, on October 3rd. And in his typical fashion, the ticketing process isn’t so typical. After the successful and experimental release of his Live At The Beacon Theatre special, in which he followed the Radiohead business model by sidestepping the industry to sell exclusively through his website for the affordable price of $5, Louis CK has decided to once again do things on his own terms.
Tickets for the tour are now for sale exclusively through his website for a flat cost of $45. By selling through his site, he’s sidestepping the horrendous ticketing fees we’ve all come to loathe through agencies like Ticketmaster and Live Nation.
“The benefit for me is that I won’t get angry emails from anyone who paid a ton of money to see me due to circumstances out of my control.” CK said in his email. “That makes me VERY happy. The 45 dollars also includes sales tax, which I’m paying for you. So I’m making more or less depending on the state.”
This formula certainly worked for the release of his special. Around the time of the release, he spoke candidly about production costs vs. profit, and it was no secret that this model benefited both Louis and his fans. He touched on his success in this tour announcement as well. “Doing things this way means I’m making less than I would have made if I did a standard tour,” he said. “In some cities I’ve had to play smaller venues and do more shows. But I like doing more shows and about a year ago I reached a place where I realized I am making enough money doing comedy so the next thing that interested me is bringing your price down. Either way, I still make a whole lot more than my grandfather who taught math and raised chickens in Michigan.”
Louis CK is easily one of, if not the funniest comic working in the US right now. His television show “Louie,” which starts its third season this Thursday on FX, is arguably some of the smartest writing on television.* And it turns out, he is a pretty savvy business man to boot. Is there anything this man can’t do?
Louis CK will be performing at Severance Hall on October 3rd, 2012 at 7:30pm. Tickets for the flat rate of $45 are on sale now at LouisCK.net.
*Here’s a clip from season 2 of “Louie.” It’s an awkward and eye-opening scene between Louis CK and Dane Cook about the accusations that Dane stole jokes from Louis.
