Cellar Door Partners with The Cleveland International Film Festival to Present Documentary about The National
by Justin Markert
Cellar Door is very excited to announce that we will be partnering with CIFF to bring you Mistaken for Strangers at the 38th Annual Cleveland International Film Festival. The documentary film follows the tour of indie band The National through the eyes of Tom Berninger, brother of lead singer Matt Berninger, in a story that starts out being about a band and ends up being about music, relationships, sibling rivalry, and the quest of a slacker to get his life together and out of the shadow of his famous rock star brother. The film opened the Tribecca Film Fest and has received rave reviews. Hailed by Michael Moore as “one of the best documentaries about a band that I’ve ever seen,” and by Pitchfork as “the funniest, most meta music movie since SPINAL TAP… At its core, Mistaken for Strangers is a documentary about making a documentary, and second to that, a deeply relatable film exploring sibling dynamics.”
Here’s the synopsis written by Cellar Door and CIFF contributor Eddie Fleisher:
Formed in Cincinnati in 1999, The National are critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated indie rock superstars. The band is comprised of two sets of brothers and lead singer Matt Berninger. His little brother Tom is an aspiring horror movie director, who was asked to join the band on the road in 2010. Instead of doing his duties as a crew member, Tom mostly just drank, annoyed everyone, and walked around with a video camera like a big shot. Unbeknownst to the band, he was gathering footage for what would eventually become Mistaken for Strangers. The rivalrous relationship between the Berningers certainly makes for some hilarious and entertaining moments. But living in the shadow of a rock star isn’t easy. Matt’s success has always dwarfed Tom’s own ambitions and projects. The tension over this, and Matt’s view of Tom as a perpetual slacker, quickly caused friction on tour, forcing them to deal with their problems head on. What begins as a simple music documentary slowly turns into an endearing film about family and the need to forge your own path.
