The fourth in a series of twelve Christmas songs, Alan Madej’s “Holiday” is the newest of the original tracks that Madej plans to write over the course of the next eight years with Yuletide in mind.
“I was coming off the back of a previous album in 2012 (Luna Bridge) and wanted to do something more light hearted. I wanted to challenge myself a bit to write something that was reflective of the Christmas mood and nicely balanced, not too sickly sweet or obnoxious,” says Madej.
The result is a revved up ditty, reminiscent of honky-tonk standards about packing up your bags and traveling to reunite for the holidays. Madej utilizes some of the cornerstones of a good Christmas carol: there are tinkling piano keys and handclaps keeping time. Bouncing vocal melodies and exaggerated scales figuratively send listeners on a sled ride through each chorus and into a refrain easy to sing along with at your own holiday party.
“I think the challenge of taking a year to write just one [song] turned into the crazy idea of writing twelve over the period of twelve years, a la the twelve days of Christmas,” Madej explains when asked why he chose to write an original instead of taking on a tried, yet true, Christmas cover. Once enough time has passed, Madej will compile each of the singles onto one album.
This year’s single is available as a free download right now on Bandcamp, along with the B-side “Everybody’s Boy” recorded live at The Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern in March. Madej’s other Christmas tracks from 2012-2014 can also be found there.
A limited homemade edition of “Holiday” will be available for free at the Acoustic Christmas Show happening Saturday, December 19th at Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern. Also playing are The Pistolettes and The Tom Katlees. The show starts at 8 p.m. and is $5 at the door.
