Both groups are touring in support of brand new albums. Lightning Bolt, legends of the genre, debuted Fantasy Empire their first full length in five years back in mid-March.

METZ has been working on their second full length entitled II after exhaustively touring the USA, Canada, and Europe over the past two years. “Its just sort of what we’ve always done, always had to do,” lead singer Alex Edkins reflects on hitting the open road.

“I think more now than ever it’s necessary for bands to tour and exist by basically getting paid from people coming to the door,” he says. “That’s the way to do it. It’s absolutely a huge part of us as a band: it’s what we love, that live rock music and the ability to connect with people is what we really get off on.”

Good things seem to come in II’s for METZ. While fans have been feverishly searching for a tentative follow-up release date on the Sub Pop website (May 4th), the two years between releases went by in a flash for Edkins. When it came to recording the new album, time away from the road writing solo at home and practicing relentlessly as a group was just what they needed. “We were confident enough to let some of the songs stretch out a bit, where the first album is very much quick shots to the face […]We got comfortable within a song before exploding it or finishing it.”

Even with a more laid back approach, II still bursts with sound. Each inch of track is piled high with guitar, vocals, drums, reverb, feedback, and select sampled sounds. They shy away from the more pop-inspired post punk of their self-titled album (a la FIDLAR who are joining them for the second leg of their tour, yet are visiting Cleveland separately). The new album matches the riff-driven noise rock of locals Chomp who will be supporting both bands on Friday.

“We sort of live in a bubble, I think,” Edkins says. “When we made that first one, we weren’t paying attention to what was cool and we’re still not. It’s never really been our thing to try to fit in. We certainly don’t think of it as a throwback, it’s just honest music from three people who kind of grew up on this stuff. We try to make something that is our own, something that is straight up METZ music, modern music. So I don’t know how things have changed, to us, nothing really. We just keep doing what we’re doing and we’re concerned with that and that alone.”

This show will shake you to your very core. Post-punk noise at it’s finest: the music that these three bands are putting out you won’t want to miss.
